But old stereotypes die hard, and Pittsburgh probably doesn’t make many people’s short list for a cosmopolitan getaway. Too bad, because this city of 89 distinct neighborhoods is a cool and — dare I say, hip—city. There are great restaurants, excellent shopping, breakthrough galleries and prestigious museums.

For decades, U.S. Steel Corp.'s 64-story tower has loomed over Pittsburgh much the way heavy manufacturing reigned over the region's jobs picture. But in a sign of the times, a new moniker is being mounted atop the skyscraper this month: "UPMC." The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the region's biggest employer, is moving its headquarters -- and 2,250 jobs -- from Oakland to the Downtown tower.
